EvergladesCompany Terminal Incorporated (ECT), a company controlled by the Swiss-ItalianMSC/Aponte Group, has signed a new ten year lease and operating agreement withFlorida? Broward County. Under the terms of the new contract, ECT willcontinue operating the 16 ha terminal at Port Everglades until at leastDecember 31, 2034, with two optional five-year extensions. This agreementreplaces a previous lease held since 2004 by MSC. Thecontainer?roro?and multipurpose cargo terminal complex at Port Everglades isa mid-sized facility with about 1,580 m of container pier. Arranged in threesections of 730 m, 600 m, and 250 m, the pier is equipped with 13 large, butnot ultra-large ship-to-shore cranes. In addition to this, it has some 470 m ofpier for general cargo ships, and mooring dolphins that two berths forstern-loading roro ships. Sub-sections of the terminal are individually leasedout to stevedores, terminal operators and carriers, such as FloridaInternational Terminal, MSC, Crowley, or King Ocean. Port Everglades typicallyhandles mid-sized ships of 1,000 to 6,000 teu. The largest scheduled callersare th 5,560 teu ?onte?class vessels in the joint USEC - ECSA loop ?ango?/?EC?of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. MSCsometimes performs ad hoc calls with 9,000 teu ships at the port, usually inthe form of extra ports on the Europe - North America ?EDGULF?service.
