Yesterday evening President Trump announced that he plans to impose tariffs on lumber and forest products. He later specified that rates would be around 25% and would become effective shortly after April 2nd. The imposition of such dramatic tariffs could pose extreme challenges to our industry. While the months ahead could present significant uncertainty, IWPA will provide details as soon as they are available. Below, we have provided more details about the expected impact of these tariffs, IWPAs planned response, and what you can do. What to Know about the Tariffs While President Trumps announcement on lumber tariffs lacked specific details, we can draw insights from recently announced tariffs. The administration has imposed three main types of tariffs so far: ?Country-specific "punitive" tariffs ?Retaliatory "reciprocal" tariffs ?"Sectoral" tariffs targeting specific industries or product categories The proposed lumber and forest products tariffs would be a type of sectoral tariff. Other sectoral tariffs that have been floated recently include tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. These tariffs may be imposed in addition to pre-existing duties. Generally, the sectoral tariffs which have been announced so far are global and do not have a path for exemptions. This policy matches that of Commerce Secretary Lutnick, who said there were far too many tariff exemptions in Trumps first term and that he would not be allowing such exemptions during his tenure as Secretary. It has appeared that most of these sectoral tariffs will not be responsive to duty rates imposed by other countries, however President Trump has indicated a willingness to negotiate the proposed automotive tariffs if other countries will reduce duties on American vehicles. We will monitor for any similar ings regarding lumber tariffs. Given the administrations dynamic policy environment, announced measures may be subject to change. The first sectoral tariffs on steel and aluminum take effect March 12th. IWPA will be closely monitoring the implemention of those tariffs for indicators on how the administration might implement the proposed tariffs on lumber and forest products.
