Top 10 carriers: capacity changes January vs July 2024

MSC? fleet recently passed the 6.0 Mteu mark. The world? largest ocean carrier this year so far added ca. 400,000 teu to its fleet.

ZIM once again recorded the biggest growth percentagewise.

Apart from MSC and ZIM, Hapag-Lloyd also expanded its fleet faster than the market average of 6.2%.

After a period of reducing its fleet size, Maersk has started to add capacity again.

the company? 1.20 Mteu orderbook is only matched by that of the third-ranked CMA CGM, which also stands at about 1.20 Mteu. In the next few years, CMA CGM will thus likely overtake Maersk to become the world? second largest container carrier.

Last year, Maersk reduced its overall capacity by 2.7%. This year, the Danes are again in an expansion mode. Their 5.6% capacity growth is only slightly less than the market average and was partly due to the delivery of the first four of 18 methanol-dual fuel powered Equinox class ships (starting with the 16,592 teu ANE MAERSK) as well as three tered neo-panamax ships.

This year, Yang Ming is the only Top-10 carrier to have reduced its fleet in the first half of the year. It has allowed fast growing ZIM to move to the ninth place in Alphaliner? ranking.

The Israeli carrier took delivery of no fewer than seven 7,800 - 7,900 teu ships and eight 5,300 - 5,500 teu units, as well as its last three LNG-powered 15,250 teu ?eo-panamaxes? Most of this new capacity was deployed in the buoyant Asia - North America trade.

Like all carriers that rapidly expanded their fleet with large mainline newbuildings, ZIM is indirectly profiting from the Asia - Europe service re-routings via the Cape of Good Hope, since these diversions helped absorb the newbuilding wave. All the fresh tonnage also allowed the Haifa-based carrier to expand its Transpacific footprint. Currently,48% of ZIM? fleet is trading between Asia and North America.

Evergreen meanwhile only added 2.8% of capacity this year, after reducing its fleet by 1% last year. The Taiwanese carrier received four more 15,370 teu M-class neo-panamax ships, but also redelivered tered tonnage and sold some older ships, including the 5,364 teu EVER URANUS (for demolition).

Its orderbook-to-fleet ratio however stands at 41.9%, which is the highest of all Top-10 carriers.
